Pop stars charged by Rhino at Safari Park!
POP band Westlife were charged by a RHINO during a trip to Knowsley Safari Park.
The Irish four-piece were shocked when the animal bolted towards their vehicle
during a visit to the park ahead of an appearance at Liverpool's Summer
Pops on Monday night.
Park manager David Ross said: "The rhino certainly caused a bit of excitement
in the car, and we had to beat a hasty retreat. She was sweltering in the
heat poor thing, and I think we got a bit too close to her. It wasn't a
full charge though thankfully!"
No-one was hurt during the incident, and the band's car was not hit. And
David said the band – Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne –
were very polite and fully enjoyed their trip.
He said: "The band were very nice blokes and I asked them what the secret to
their success was, as it seems like they'd been around for ages, and they
said it was because they were such good mates."
Earlier, they were treated to a slap up lunch with owner, the 19th Earl of
Derby, swimming in his pool and playing frisbee on the lawn. The group left
around 5pm to prepare for their show.
David added: "I didn't know in advance that they would be coming here,
I think they just wanted somewhere to relax."

Westlife go on a stately safari
By Adrian Butler Daily Post Staff

WESTLIFE chose an unlikely venue to spend a day relaxing before their sell-out
concert at the Summer Pops.
Instead of visiting the Albert Dock's bars or enjoying a shopping trip on
Mathew Street, they spent the day with an earl at his stately home.
The Irish boy band lunched with the Earl of Derby at Knowsley Hall before
getting a tour of his safari park.
The five-piece band arrived at the hall in time for a buffet lunch with the earl.
They then went swimming in Knowsley Hall's pool, and relaxed on the lawns,
touring the grounds and playing Frisbee.
In the afternoon, Knowsley Safari Park manager David Ross gave them a VIP tour
in his car, where they saw the 120-strong troupe of baboons and the rest of
the park's animals.
The group left around 5pm to begin preparation for their show.
The hall is becoming known as something of a haunt for pop stars.
Last month, veteran rockers Status Quo played an outdoor concert in its grounds.
Two years ago Kylie Minogue was invited to a dinner there in aid of the
NSPCC's Safe Place Appeal, and last year comic Joan Rivers toured the hall
with the Daily Post's Peter Elson.
A spokesman for the Earl said: "I think they wanted somewhere to relax
in private."
Last night was the band's only Summer Pops appearance, with tickets selling
out among their devoted fans.
Since 1998 Westlife have had 13 UK number one singles, including Flying
without Wings and Seasons in the Sun. They have sold nearly 40m albums
worldwide and have seven multi-platinum albums.

Irish society attend Marbella charity ball
A lavish “White Tie and Diamonds” fundraising ball held in Marbella last
Saturday night attracted a Who’s Who of Irish society.
The ball was organised by Marc and Lynn Quinlan, with the event being held in
honour of their son Leon, who drowned two years ago. Following on from their
tragedy, the couple set up the Water Angels charity for victims of water
accidents. Funds from Saturday night’s ball are being used to make a short
film on water safety to be distributed in both Spain and Ireland.
Irish comedian and television present Brendan Courtney acted as the master of
ceremonies, with entertainment provided by the Marbella Big Band.
The event was a huge success, with all of the £2,500 tickets being sold.
Lisa Murphy, the now ex-girlfriend of Michael Flatley, was just one of the
famous names in attendance.
Marc and Lynn Quinlan are proprietors of Marbella’s popular Beckitt’s Bar
and Restaurant, which lists a glamorous clientele including Bertie Ahern,
along with celebrities such as Louis Walsh, members of
Westlife and some of
Ireland’s wealthiest families, including the Smurfits, Reynolds, Dunnes,
and McCreevys.

Nicky's Summer Profile
Nicky
My favourite holiday: When I was about eight my parents and I went to
Canada for two weeks. I’d never been to the States and it was just the best
thing ever. We went to see the Falls, which was just incredible. I still love
travelling to these big cities, but when you first see it at that age it’s
just amazing.
My favourite getaway: Travelling through the South of France.
My favourite hotel: I like the chain of W hotels in the States.
But Four Seasons as a whole, definitely.
If I’ve got time off I…love to spend it with my beloved wife Georgina
and my dog Keano.
My funniest holiday story: I travelled to Miami with Georgina and Shane
and Gillian. We took some photographs and I have this habit of playing
paparazzi where I just grab the camera and take a picture. When we got them
back there was one where Shane just looked like his face was inside out.
He looked about 45 stone.
My suitcase essentials: Wallet, phone, passport. With that I can get anywhere.
My favourite summer tunes: This summer I’ve been listening to
James Blunt, but if you want to talk about summer in general I remember when
‘Mr Vain’ and ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’ came out. I also remember a song that
Georgina bought me called ‘You Sure Do’ by Strike. I used to like that.
The place I’d most like to visit: The south of Italy, right in the boot.
I absolutely love it.

Fagan back on the football pitch
By Tomás Rohan
Newly crowned Irish light welterweight champion Oisin Fagan has dusted off
his football boots for charity. The Portmarnock native claimed the vacant
Irish title belt with an impressive stoppage win over Jeff Thomas at the
National Stadium last month.
Last week though the 32-year-old returned back to his footballing roots
when he took part in the annual Colin McKeon 5 aside event at the Portmarnock
Sports and Leisure Centre. A celebrity match was organised in aid of the
Asthma Society of Ireland.
"Colin was my best pal and died of asthma when he was 22," explained Fagan.
"The Colin McKeon 5-a sides go on for a full week and has a carnival-type
atmosphere all the way through. It's played on the grounds of the PSLC every
year and commenced from June 20th to 24th ending with a great awards
presentation on the Saturday night."
"Paul Irwin is the organiser and has been from the very start. I used to
help out before I left for the US, but Paul has been brilliant at keeping
it going throughout the years."
The event has attracted many names down through the years including Jason
McAteer, Paddy McGuinesss, Shay Keogh the former Dublin footballer, Dave
Mitchell who plays Jimmy in Fair City, Brian McFadden,
Nicky Byrne and the
other members of
Westlife.
Fagan says that the event is a fitting tribute to his late friends memory.
"It's a great tribute to Colin and the McKeon family that he can be remembered
in such a way. It's like a community week for the Portmarnock area and 32
teams from all over Dublin enter the event every year, making for a great
time in Portmarnock. It brings young and old together in aid of a great cause.
"Colin's Anniversary is on the 14th of July. He was a great footballer himself
and was on the books at Celtic until his life came to a sudden end. I'd like
to thank all the celebrities who gave us their precious time to help make
the event such a success. It goes from strength to strength every year."
As for the celebrity match itself - it finished 1-1 before Fagan's side lost
out on penalties. The local man did his bet though netting his side's only
goal and also converted a penalty in the shootout.
Soccer was originally Fagan's first love and after an impressive performance
in the Leinster Junior Cup Final for Portmarnock ten years ago he was offered
a trial at then English premiership outfit Leeds United. He was also offered a
soccer scholarship at a University in Chicago.
Injury ensured Fagan had to pass up both opportunities but his on his return to
fitness he continued to impress and soon accepted another scholarship
opportunity at Oklahoma University. After a number of successful years in the
U.S. injury once again hampered his career so he picked up a pair of boxing
gloves instead.
Having turned pro in 2002 the Oklahoma based Fagan has so far compiled a
record of 16 wins and 3 losses and holds the Oklahoma State lightweight
championship as well as the recently won Irish light welterweight title.
