Brian & Nicky Pitch Battle...

Despite the fact that singer Brian McFadden walked out on Westlife and his fellow Dubliner bandmate Nicky Byrne the two remain firm-friends and still enjoy a kick-about together...

As the Irish media were in a Pamela Anderson frenzy last weekend ShowBiz Ireland side-stepped the chaos and instead caught up with two of our old favourites Brian McFadden and Nicky Byrne.

When we heard the two North Dublin singers were about to take part in a local 5-a-side charity football match in Portmarnock we made our way along only to see Nicky with a genuine Kenny Dalglish Liverpool shirt in a frame and show it off to Brian, his wife Georgina and a few of his old mates as we pulled up...

We don't know whether the jersey was a prize for the winners of the soccer tournament or Nicky just showing off how much great stuff he has - either way all assembled seemed really impressed!

Brian & Nicky grabbed their aptly named team-mates "The Triple Barrellers" together and got ShowBiz Ireland to take the traditional team photo before the soccer started (well it's about time we pulled our weight!)...

Then on cue they all spun around to reveal "Hot Like Aido" written on the backs of their shirts, all except team member Aido who had "Don't Cha Wish Your Boyfriend Was Hot Like Me" written on his jersey - obviously an in-house joke!

Apart from a few of their old friends and a few Portmarnock locals the two world famous singers were pretty much treated as normal players on the pitch - unusually no hoards of screaming girls for Brian & Nicky here...

All except for Nicky's sexy wife Georgina and his Dad Nicky Senior who both encouraged him and the rest of the Barrellers from the side-lines.

We don't know who ended up winning the mini tournament as we got the call that Pamela Anderson was on the move again on the other side of town and we had to speed off. That, plus we've learned from experience that it's better for us paparazzi types to beat a hasty retreat before night falls out in the suburbs as sometimes the locals get restless!

Nicky In Heat Magazine
TV Shows: Soccer AM with its presenters Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain. The two of them are really funny together. And also, the way I see it, a girl knowing that much about football is very impressive.

Pin-up: Scarlett Johansson is beautiful. There's something different-looking about her. I saw her in Lost in Translation and thought she was brilliant.

Snacks: I'm a complete sucker for Cadbury's Buttons. And I like to have a nice cup of tea with two-and-a-half sugars.

Switch-off: I'm not a big fan of reality TV and I really don't like Big Brother. I think it's disgusting and I literally can't watch it.

Nicky's Post-Tour Interview
So how was the tour for you?
It went really well actually. We’ve had the best reports back from everybody; family, friends, critics. This year we really sat down before we even planned this tour and made sure we were streets ahead of last year. We really stepped up our game and it’s worked really well.

Which were your favourite dates?
It would be hard to pick. In Belfast they’re really crazy, but Dublin is my hometown and the gig is only 15-20 minutes away from my house, and that’s always really cool. Glasgow was always amazing and Manchester was cool too, but they’ve all been brilliant.

What was your favourite song to perform?
The medley section was my favourite part by far. There were a couple of songs in there that we completely stripped down and changed and the choreography was quite raunchy. The crowd seemed to love the choice of songs this year and the feedback is absolutely incredible.

Have you seen any good banners?
There seem to have been a lot less banners this year, but there have been a lot of really young kids who wouldn’t have even been alive when Westlife started. They’re probably a bit young to be making banners, but the older people have swung bras and knickers at us. Kian tries them on at the end of every night.

How do you unwind?
I’ll just go home and take a bath and go to bed, or sometimes we have a few beers in the bar, nothing too mad. But if we’re all around in Dublin, for example, then we have a big party with our friends and family. Ireland is always about trying to catch up with people because you spend so much time out of the country, and over in the UK, we all had our own thing going on with our families.

What have you got planned now the arena shows have finished?
We’ve got a lot of outdoor gigs to do and we’re obviously trying to plan a holiday as well. I’m in current talks with an Irish movie director to shoot a movie this summer. It won’t take up any Westlife time because I’m going to do it over the holidays. I’m not going to give too much away as it’s not 100% happening, but if I can squeeze it in I’ll do it. But I’ll try and have a decent holiday abroad, definitely, and we’ve got to record the new album. The new songs are coming in thick and fast at the moment.

What have been your highlights over the last few months?
Really just the success of the album. I mean, ‘You raise Me Up’ has turned into an anthem amongst our fans, it gets such an emotional response at our shows. It broke new markets for us, it was number one in Australia for four weeks, which is fantastic. We’re just happy boys. The relationship between us and our label is good so we’re buzzing!

Westlife postpones June 3 concert
By Michelle Zhang

Westlife postponed their Shanghai concert on June 3 because band member Nicky Byrne has acute enteritis.

A doctor recommended Byrne avoid long flights until June 9 as he recovers from an intestinal tract infection.

The make-up date for the concert has not been confirmed yet. But the organizer, CPPA Entertainment Ltd, said the concert will probably be held on June 25.

So far, more than 60 percent of tickets for the June 3 concert have been sold. The organizer said these tickets can be used at the make-up date. Those who want to return tickets can go to East Asia Ticket (Gate 6, Shanghai Stadium, 666 Tianyaoqiao Road) before June 3.

According to the former itinerary, the band was scheduled to arrive in Shanghai on Tuesday and was going to visit other parts of the country to record a documentary series before the concert. The organizer said the documentary will still be filmed, but at a later date.

Acute enteritis delays Westlife's concert
By Michelle Zhang

Westlife is postponing their Shanghai concert on June 3 because one of the band members, Nicky Byrne, caught acute enteritis and his doctor suggested that he postpone the long haul flight until June 9.

The new concert date has not yet been confirmed. The local organizer, CPPA Entertainment Ltd, said the concert will most likely be held on June 25.

So far, more than 60 percent of the tickets for the June 3 concert have been sold. The organizer said these tickets can still be used for the postponed concert. However, ticket refunds are available at East Asia Ticket Gate 6, Shanghai Stadium, 666 Tianyaoqiao Road, before June 3.

Westlife was supposed to arrive in Shanghai on May 23. They planned to visit other parts of the country including Henan, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to record a documentary before the concert.

The organizer said the documentary recording schedule will also be postponed.

The Shanghai performance is the Irish boy band's only concert stop in China on their world tour this year. Westlife is one of the most popular foreign musical acts among Chinese audiences.

Uptown skirl for Westlife
Boy band's joy at bagpipe gift
By Billy Sloan

Westlife might be pop music's biggest box office attraction in Scotland - but they're the worst pipers in the country.

The Irish boy band were presented with a set of custom made bagpipes by the SECC to mark their record-breaking 25 sell-out nights at the Glasgow venue.

But the guys - Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily -had fellow guests running for cover at the plush Mar Hall hotel in Bishopton as they tried to play them.

Nicky said: "It's always totally baffled me how you get a tune out of these things. We'll give it a go but I reckon our neighbours might have to move house judging by the racket we'll be making."

The bagpipes were specially made by McCallums of Kilmarnock, who provided similar sets for Madonna's Reinvention world tour.

Nicky added: "We've worn kilts on stage in Scotland before, so maybe if we get it together we can play a bagpipe version of our hit song Queen Of My Heart."

Last night, the Irish super-group - who have won millions of fans with hits such as Uptown Girl and I Have A Dream - chalked up a phenomenal 25 sold-out gigs at the SECC to a combined audience of 205,000 fans.

It makes them the biggest selling act in the arena's star-studded 21-year history.

Shane said: "There's no reason why we can't add to that total.

"We're making a new album this year and releasing a greatest hits in 2007.

"We want to keep doing this - we've got a great job."

Phil Mead, the SECC's deputy director of events, added: "It's an incredible achievement which we don't think will ever be surpassed.

"We've had some great acts at the SECC but none come close to 25 sell-outs."

Cancer girl meets her heroes
By John Ferguson

Cancer victim Lisa Norris's dream came true when she met her heroes Westlife last night.

The 16-year-old had been looking forward to the Irish boyband's show since she got tickets four months ago.

And when they heard of Lisa's battle to regain her health, they wanted to meet her before going on stage at Glasgow's SECC.

Lisa said: "They are my favourite boy-band of all time. I could hardly speak, I was so nervous about meeting them.

"Looking forward to the show has really helped me through, they are all gorgeous and their music is amazing. I would have been happy just to see the show. I can't believe I got to actually hug them and talk to them. It was great."

Lisa, of Girvan, Ayrshire, is battling a brain tumour and was given potentially fatal radiation overdoses at the Beatson Oncology Centre earlier this year.

Nicky from Westlife said: "When we heard Lisa's story, we really wanted to meet her. She has been so brave.

"We are all hoping that she makes a full recovery. I am sure she will because she has shown such courage."

Nicky's Tour Profile

Favourite tour… Mine was the In & Out tour. We did about 107 nights, in every city, and got to do a lot of acrobatic stuff, like abseiling in. The unfortunate part is it was never filmed as a live show.
Favourite venue… Difficult question for me. I love Belfast, I love the Globe in Sweden when it’s full, Manchester’s always fantastic, Wembley’s great and Dublin’s great.
Standout gig… The Coca Cola Dome in Jo’burg. We did it twice, and both times it was sold out and absolutely jammed. But actually, I think to beat that was two nights in Lansdowne Road on our Greatest Hits tour. For me on a personal level, I was going to Lansdowne Road as a kid to watch the Republic of Ireland play soccer from the age of six, and then to be there and play was incredible.
Favourite track to perform live… World Of Our Own
Most memorable fan moment… Sometimes you get requests from parents to play for their daughters who aren’t very well. This one girl wasn’t going to make it very long and we got up on stage and sang to her. It’s always very, very hard.
Most memorable banner... ‘Nicky shake your shamrocks’
Funniest thing thrown on stage… There was a little baby thrown up on stage once. I picked it up, but it turned out to be a doll.
Most looking forward to on tour... Apart from the live crowds and all the screaming and the girls that throw their knickers at us, I would say the catering. My dressing room requests…I like Celebrations sweets. I have to have them before I go on stage or I refuse to go on.
